St. Januarius St. Januarius was born in Italy around 272 A.D., and died around 305 A.D. St. Januarius is what he is now called, but he was known as Saint Gerrano. Januarius was the bishop of Benevento and faced prosecution from Emperor Diocletian. Januarius was able to save some fellow Christians during this hard time, eventually but he went see to imprisoned men, and he was placed in prison himself. Januarius had evaded death twice, but was eventually executed. His blood was saved in veils, and when brought into a church, it liquefies. This miracle has big impact of people, and continues to baffle people today. In this Miracle, St. Januarius was about 15 when he became a priest. Then at the age of 20, he became the bishop of Benevento. It is believed that Januarius was born into an affluent family. Unfortunately, little is known about St. Januarius’s life, but what we do know is truly inspiring as Christian. Januarius escapes death twice. First, he was thrown into a furnace, but was reported to have come out unsinged. Next they threw him in an arena with starved beast. This holiday is called Feast of San Genaro. In New York this holiday is usually held in that last weeks of September. Feast of San Genaro is a festival held on the street called Little Italy, in Manhattan. A mass is also held in the “Church of Most Precious Blood”. The people of Naples contribute the blood liquefying as a sign of good luck in the future. For the Napoleons the liquefaction of the blood is a big deal. Napoleons are very excited on the days when the blood gets liquefied. Those three days are the first Sunday in May, September 19, and December 16. St. Januarius’s miracle affects the church by showing that there is peace and salvation in death.
