During the Great depression people went through a lot of different types of problems. Specially kids because there childhood was very affected by all the problems on that time. During the Great depression there was no jobs, no money and no food. It was very hard to get everything, people struggle a lot to survive. During that time a lot of women were alone raising their child because a lot of men were sent to war. It was very hard for women to raise their child alone, some women had to send their child because they couldn’t have it.
“The Sky is Gray” by Ernest Gaines tells the story of an African American child. His name was James, he was a young kid but he didn’t think like a kid of his age. James live with his mother, her name was Octavia.

When Emily was eight months old her father left. Her father wrote a good-bye note saying he could no longer endure. It was really hard for her mom to raise her, since it was the great depression there was no jobs or food. Her mom had to leave her with her dad family because she couldn’t have her anymore. It took a long time for her mom to bring her back because she didn’t have fair money and Emily also got sick. Emily went to nursery school, which she didn’t like. Also when her sister susan was born, she was sent to convalescent home. Again Emily’s mom couldn’t have her again. Emily grew up being a skinny and cold child. She went through so much because of the mom and dad absence that she didn’t look happy. She switch a lot of living places and she didn’t have a stable childhood. Her mom then try to give her all the love, she wanted her daughter happy but it wasn’t working. That’s why the name of the story is “i stand here ironing”, because she kept going back and forth with her mom role but nothing was working. Emily struggle so much during her childhood because it was hard times, even though her mom didn’t want to put her through all that struggle she had
