Stapleton’s Motivation In the novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, readers are taken through a suspenseful mystery case created by Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Just when you think you can predict what will happen next, another surprise is thrown your way. Each character in the novel plays a significant role, but one character stands out from the rest and shocks everyone. The character, known as Stapleton, covers up his true identity and uses many lies to help him during the story. Stapleton’s main motivation is to inherit the great Baskerville fortune. Stapleton is third in line in the Baskerville family to receive it so he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the Baskerville fortune. Stapleton’s motivations unfold throughout the story and his actions are revealed. Stapleton returns to England with a fake identity and takes advantage of an old legend about the hound as a way to cover up his crimes. He uses the local superstitions that Hugo Baskerville made people believe about a vicious hound whose muzzle is coated with phosphorus. Such as the way he presented himself to Watson with his butterfly net, innocent and a little odd. However, he kept asking many questions about Sir Henry and wanting to know information which looking back on can look suspicious. Stapleton also lied about his wife, Beryl Stapleton, saying that she is his sister. Stapleton forced his wife to go along with the plan and thought that she could get more information out of Watson by being Mr. Stapleton’s “sister” instead of wife.
