Star Spangled Banner

The Star Spangled Banner is very important to early American history. The song was written by Francis Scott Key, who was at the Battle of Baltimore. Afterwards, the British withdrew their threat to the nation's capital and ended the war. He wrote the poem and it became very popular. Shortly afterwards he published it, it was set to music. It is also our national anthem today. The first verses, printed just days after the battle, noted the words to be sung to the melody of “To Anacreon in Heaven.” Scott-Key was quite familiar with the tune, having used it in a previous poem, which included a reference to a “star-spangled flag.” In 1814 the Star Spangled Banner
