Stardust Movie Vs Book Analysis

When a book is adapted into a movie, the result can differ greatly from the original. There are a multitude of reasons as to why this happens—inclusive of a limited time frame or different interpretations of scenes. This has also affected the work, Stardust, after it was adapted into a movie as there are evident changes in Victoria and Tristran personalities, episodes with the lightning-hunting expedition crew, and the endings.
Victoria’s personality definitely has a large shift from the book to the movie. In the beginning of Stardust, there is a scene where Victoria walks into Monday and Brown’s—the place where Tristran worked—to gather different supplies for her mother. This already showcases the fact that Victoria is a lot more mature and gentle in the book, while she’s portrayed as immature and cocky in the movie. Another example would be when Tristran has come back from his journey and arrives in Wall. In the book, Victoria apologizes as soon as she sees him, as well as expresses her guilt and regret saying, “I must apologize to you. It was my foolishness, my idiocy, that sent you off on your journeying” and “I had to live…each day...with the possibility I had sent you to your death.” (p.223) In the movie, Victoria demands to see the star the minute she meets him, overall having a negative attitude towards Tristran. Similarly to Victoria, Tristran also seems a lot more gentle and caring in the book, while being perceived as more childish and hateful in the movie. This is shown when Tristran first meets the star. In the book, the star breaks her leg and struggles to walk. Tristran feels sorry and tries his best to help her—“And every time she winced or flinched Tristran felt guilty and awkward” (p.111).
