Working in the healthcare field requires a unique set of skills, it involves balancing both a personal and professional relationship. This concept holds true for those striving to become great physical therapists. Being a professional while attending a doctor of physical therapy program involves many different qualities. Most importantly DPT students should be selfless, respectful, accountable, and good communicators, among other various qualities.
Selflessness is an obvious trait that a DPT student should possess. First and foremost physical therapists are providing a service for people. We should primarily be concerned with how the patient is feeling and what they need from us. Although being a physical therapist is considered a business, the patients should never be seen as a commodity, they should be seen as individuals that we’re trying our best to heal. After numerous hours of shadowing and working in various physical therapy settings I have come to realize a very obvious difference between physical therapist’s who are more interested in the needs of others than with their own and vice versa.
