Working as a student employee in the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) physical oceanography group has been an amazing experience. I have been able to take part and learn new and interesting things and have been given the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. Through this job I have had the ability to join the HOT research cruises and help with the collection of data, learning new skills that have been perfected through the last 30 years. While on the ship I learned how to safely conduct research while pitching and rolling around on the ocean. When the seas are unpredictable I learned to work under pressure while maintaining the safety protocol. Even doing a bucket temperature over the side of the ship requires a safety vest in case something should happen. Personally, I learned that I love being out at sea and having the ability to disconnect from the world and focus on a single goal: science. As his assistant, I have learned many new skills and have been a part of many opportunities. Some of which were helping to assemble and build a brand new 24 place rosette frame, design the brackets, and be apart of something that will be going down to 4700m to collect samples and discover new information. A year and a half ago, if you had asked me to perform maintenance on a rosette frame or microCAT, I would have been confused on what you were talking about. It has since then become one of my passions and I have been obsessed with learning more and being a part of more scientific discovery. I also learned that double-checking is an important process. If someone double checks your work, it doesn’t mean that they don’t trust your work. It is an insurance policy to make sure everything runs smoothly.
