Is Social media a blessing or a curse?

Now days society is so privileged and spoiled with these practical gadgets like the IPod, smart phone, I pad, nook, 3-D movies, touchscreen this and that. Don’t get me wrong this new technology is handy dandy and sometimes just plain amazing to mess with but do we really need it. No.
Not to long ago cd players was they way to listen to music and the Internet was more of a place to find information not a place to randomly post about how bad your day was. I mean this social networking did help during the riots in Egypt concerning Mubarak and his tyrannical ruling. Through Facebook people were able to organize an uprising and stand up to the government. However society is so hung up on all these social networking sites that we have lost our ability to properly communicate with each other. One day I was eating at a restaurant with my family and saw this other family in front of us all on their cellphones texting, on Facebook, or playing games. I realized how these gadgets distance us from people and hinder us from having a healthy relationship with our family and friends. Also because of Facebook, MySpace and any other social networking people have lost their communication skills because it is so easy to hide behind a computer and say what ever you feel but in person it is a whole different story because we are not used to exposing ourselves. Also phone calls, how often do you see teens calling their friends about where their going to meet up or go, everything is via text why because it is easier and there are no awkward silences that is often accompanied with phone calls plus texting you can take your time and think about what you are going to say however texting has made the English writing suffer why because why spell out the word “ you” when you can just put the letter “u” and still be able to say the same thing. Also the rise of social networking has lead to cyber bulling the most cowardly thing anyone can do. It is so easy to speak your mind through the Internet and not get any aftershocks with it.
