Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes: Character Analysis. In the novel Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, all the characters are different in their own ways. The first character and one of the main characters is Sarah Byrnes. Sarah Byrnes is Brave. When she was little her parents got into many physical fights. She would sit there and watch them fight most likely feeling scared. But there was one fight when she was only three years old that changed her life forever, and led her to becoming “ugly”. She went out of her way to help her mother and ended up paying for it. “I was only about three and a half, but i remember it like it happened this morning. My mom and dad were fighting. Real bad. Hitting, throwing things. It’s the only time I ever remember my mother fighting back. Dad had her by the hair, and he was filling the kitchen sink to put her head in. I was sure he would kill her… I ran at him, screaming, and crashed into his legs. It knocked him off a little, and he loosened his grip and my mother got away… he held me in front of him and backed through the open hallway into the living room, laughing. And he said here’s your pretty little baby for you”, and looked up and saw the wood stove coming right at my face.” That is how Sarah Byrnes braveness made her ugly.
