The Grammy-Award winning bluegrass band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, performed in Memorial Hall on Friday, November the 11th, bringing the band back home to their roots. Formed in 2000 when the artists were students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the band has grown to achieve great success, collaborating with banjoist Steve Martin and receiving the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2013. The Steep Canyon Rangers showed the crowd an impeccable concert which captivated the audience with their upbeat and energetic performance, along with beautiful and intricate instrumentation on the guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle, mandolin, and drums. When the stage lights flicked on, the crowd went wild, clapping and screaming for the band, and creating very high energy in the auditorium. The band continued to use the stage lights during their performance: the lights turning off after an exuberant song and then coming back on at the start of the next song. The band generated a very dynamic and upbeat performance, with fiddle player, Nicky Sanders, constantly walking, stomping, running, and dancing to the music. His energetic performance, as well as the rest of the bands’ captivating musical talents, thrilled the audience and kept them clapping and tapping their legs to the beat of the music. Other band members also seemed to enjoy their time while performing, bobbing their heads and tapping their feet, moving around the stage, and grooving to the music. Midway through the concert, the band played an instrumental song in which each member of the band came forward and performed a short solo, which showcased each band members individual and unique talents, with Graham Sharp on the banjo, Mike Guggino on the mandolin, Charles Humphrey playing the bass, Mike Ashworth on the drums, Nicky Sanders on the fiddle and guitarist and singer Woody Platt.
