Steinbeck's 'All Quiet On The Western Front': Chapter Summarizing

Strategy one: Summarizing During the second chapter Steinbeck starts out by talking about the German captains that were occupying the town. He talks about Captain Bentick saying, “Captain Bentick was a family man, a lover of dogs and pink children and Christmas. He was too old to be a captain, but a curious lack of ambition had kept him in that rank.” He also talks about Captain Loft being too young of a Captain but he took much pride in the fact that he was a soldier. Another important thing that happens during this chapter is that Captain Bentick was killed.

Strategy two: Connecting
At the beginning of the book I connected the Nazi invasion of this town in Norway like the US invasion of Iraq. I thought this because the reasons that each of the places were invaded were similar and different. That was the first thing that I thought of when reading this section. If you thought that it would be read after the war then why did you think that. Would it be because of the historical event it takes place in or because it had a good theme in it. I personally think that it is still read today because of both of those reasons I think that the book has a good theme and I also think that the historical time period helped the book not die off. Also what do you think the main theme is, because the way that I interpreted the story was that you shouldn't let people beat up on you because you are smaller than them. In this case the village would be the thing getting beaten up and the Nazis would be the bully or the theme could be something like stand up for what you believe in. But that's what I thought the main theme was it could be something else
