Stein uses Freud’s critiques of religion to suggest that giving up on ones instincts, or desires, is advantageous but also detrimental to an individual’s image. Stein also suggests that if you suppress your own instincts or desires it is often that through Freud’s ideas of the Id, Ego, and Superego those suppressed desires will return and can potentially create issues.

Stein defines fundamentalism as the quest to rid of the two elements of fear that lead to fundamentalist formations or to transcend them.
