The Trevinos had a rough time starting a family. Their newborn son, Andy, had a rare disease that caused his immune system to be non-existent. Doctors tried to come up with solutions to save his life, but they all fell short. However, they finally found an answer at Boston’s Children’s Hospital. The only possible solution was to have another baby. Andy needed a stem cell transplant. However, the doctors couldn’t find him a match. So, the Trevinos decided to have another child. Once Mrs. Trevino was pregnant, they used the stem cells from that embryo for Andy’s transplant. Andy made a full recovery and received a baby sister in the process (1). But, they believe that if an embryo is not going to become life, it is best suited for stem cell research. If an embryo is not implanted into a female, it will eventually need to be disposed of. This is due to the fact that embryos acquire freezer burn if left in liquid nitrogen for too long (3). So, these people are saying that embryos with no mothers shouldn’t go to waste. Instead, we should perform tests on them and retrieve their cells to further human life and outlook (4). However, there is an issue raised with this standpoint. It is possible for fertilization companies to make a surplus of embryos just for research. This is difficult to prove unlawful, but people who support stem cell research do not support this method of carrying it out. They believe that stem cell research is boundless for medical advancement, but it should only occur with instances of an accidental surplus of embryos (4).
