One noteworthy scene in The Stepford Wives takes place in the grocery store at the conclusion of the film. In it, long shots, peaceful music, casual conversation, and elaborate costumes are used to address the absurdity of the town of Stepford. Many of the shots taken in the grocery store are from far away using fluid movements throughout the aisles. In the scene, the camera pans from one aisle to the next as the Stepford wives push their carts. The only time the camera zooms in is at the conclusion of the scene when Joanna is seen. The camera remains at a distance from its subjects in order to make the viewer feel like a spectator, not like he or she is in the film. The music being played is what might be considered elevator music. The songs have no words and are very bland. The only time this style of music is disrupted is when the black couple that is new to town is spotted and when Joanna is seen. The music is used to demonstrate the sameness of everyone in Stepford and is satirical in nature. This style of music is disrupted when the black couple is seen in order to contrast them from the rest of Stepford. The music style also changes when the camera zooms in on Joanna as a means to show her transformation. The conversations that take place between characters are all very short and consist mainly of greetings. This demonstrates the unearthly behaviors of the Stepford wives as it is very odd that no one would stop to have a more meaningful conversation. The only exception to these hurried greetings, is the new couple to town who can be seen arguing with each other in the store. This couple is used to contrast Stepford from normal towns and once again show how odd Stepford is. The choice of music in this scene, along with the brief conversations that take place, denote how inhuman and robot-like everyone in Stepford is and hint at the absurdity that is the town of Stepford.
