Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. Stephen was the second born in the family. The Marriage soon dissolved when he was a toddler; His father told them he was leaving to get cigarettes and he never came back. He split his early childhood in Indiana and Connecticut between his mother and father’s homes. When he was eleven, his mother brought the children back to Maine to care for her elderly parents. He attended Dunham Elementary while he lived with his mother and brother. His mother worked as a caregiver in a home for the mentally challenged. Life for them was a constant finical struggle and King lived in poverty even after he was married for a few years. King was raised Methodist and still remains that religion as an adult. It was during this time, Stephen witnessed one of his friends being struck and killed by a train, He has a recollection of the event, even though some critics suggest that this occurrence might have inspired some of his darkest writings. …show more content…
He began writing short stories for a newspaper his brother published with a mimeograph machine. He soon began selling short stories he wrote based on movies he had seen. Two pieces of work he did in high school were called “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber” and “In a Half World of Terror.” In 1996, he graduated from Benson Falls High School. While King was still in high school, he took a job at the local mill to save money for college.
