Stephen King Why We Crave Horror Movies

Read to Respond: Speculating about Causes or Effects Over the years, horror movies were the entertainment for young adults everywhere. They were that trend in high school that never died. Adolescents seem to be hooked to movies such as Stephen King movies based off of his books, The Shining, Misery. Lisey’s Story, etc. In Stephen King’s article Why We Crave Horror Movies, he has a solid argument about why people crave horror and emotions and how everyone is insane to some sort of degree. Whether an individual craves fear or a character dying a gruesome death, King explains that every person has a different level of insanity. In the genre, horror, there are many different categories. King makes sure to relate his article to the mutiny of an adolescent. All while explaining why horror movies is an outlet. Adults are always telling the younger generations they are insane and bizarre. King on the other hand believes everyone is impractical to some degree. He states, “If we are all insane, then sanity becomes a matter of degree” (King, 380). Stephen King explains insanity is common, but the general public only accepts the bare minimum. Which in some cases it should, but on the other hand imagination should not be hidden. It is only for the amusement of the world. King explains how older adults have different degrees than those of a teen. Stephen King wrote in his article, “If your insanity leads you to carve up women like Jack the Ripper or The Cleveland Torso Murderer, we clap you away in the funny farm… on the other hand if your insanity leads you only to talk to yourself when your under stress… then you are left alone to go about your business” (King, 380). King demonstrates the different levels of insanity. It goes to show each generation is different and even though some insanity’s are unacceptable, generations should not be judged by the degree of emotions they
