For Stephen King cigarettes and smoking symbolize anxiety. On page 221 he says "He reached into the drawer and brought out a cigarette. He caressed it, fondled it." He hadn't had a cigarette the whole day so each box made him tempted. Everywhere he looked there where cigarette boxes. Even though he knew the consequences he still smoked it and said he will blame his wife.
Stephen king's most powerful use of foreshadowing is when he refers to Jimmy McCann's weight. It gives the reader a glimpse into the ending. On page 20 King writes"Yes. A little too much in fact. But I took it off again. I'm about right now. I was skinny before." It shows how he gained weight even though they warned him. It helps the reader gain a bad sensation. Stephen
