Stereotypes In Hua Hsu's The End Of White America

In Hua Hsu’s “The End of White America” he discusses the change that the country has overcome and that stereotypes no longer exist in the modern world. Hsu believes that thanks to the Civil Rights Movement that these stereotypes have been exploded and that prejudice no longer exists, that any man of any creed or race can achieve whatever they desire. Examples of this include the likes of Tiger Woods, Eminem, Will Smith, and Sean Combs. All these men have achieved momentous accolades in their respected careers, careers in which no one thought they would succeed. Even with all these fine examples, I still believe that the Civil Rights Movement failed in some ways. I do not think that Kendall sees the desire for upward social mobility as a positive development. Kendall believes fully in the notion that the rich are only getting richer and that the poor are only getting poorer. The gap between social classes is not tightening over time but instead expanding, creating an ever-growing gap. This is proved by some of the statements that Kendall makes, “Since the 1990s, the poor have been more likely to stay poor, and the affluent have been more likely to stay affluent” (Kendall 338). The facts Kendall stated mention how the top percentage of wealthier families is slowly increasing. These facts that she presents on page 338 are very interesting, and really prove her point about the expanding social ranks. Kendall also mentions television and the effect it has on the friction amongst classes. She says if the media does not change the way they depict each class, then as individuals we can break the barriers we have
