Tootsie was one of the first feminine movies of its time but it's success was masked by the fact that the main character was Michael Dorsey dressed as a female, Dorothy Michaels. The movie tackled the problem of disrespect towards women in the film industry and challenged the stereotype that only petite and pretty girls can get big roles. Tootsie also depicts its female actors, Julie and Sandy as strong and independent characters. Michael Dorsey realized how hard it truly is to be a women which gave him perspective. The movie was revolutionary because it featured a female lead and was one of the first movies to do so the fact that it was a man playing the part enhanced the message.
