Band Kids: The Good, The Bad, but Definitely Ugly It seems that in every movie that is set in a high school has a preconceived notion of all the cliques and groups in high school. For example, the football players and cheerleaders are the most popular in school, while the performing arts students, like drama, choir, and band, are bottom of the rung of the social hierarchy. But, why is that? Well this is all thanks something called stereotypes and misconceptions. A stereotype is used to categorize a group of people. It is a widely believed mental picture of a group of based on truth but exaggerated. Meanwhile a misconception is a view that is incorrect and is based on untruth, assumptions and are not exaggerated from anything. That being said band kids have suffered some huge stereotyping such as, most if not all people in band are nerds, they do it because band kids can’t play any other sports, and the biggest one that band kids are socially awkward. …show more content…
These things exist because of certain familial and media influences as well as people’s lack of knowledge on a group of people. Unlike stereotypes, misconceptions can stem from made up facts and misunderstandings while stereotypes are based on some truth but exaggerated truths nonetheless. In addition to being mixed up with each other, people often get them mixed up with prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience while discrimination is the unjust treatment of something or somebody. Stereotypes and misconceptions are solely on the beliefs a person has toward a certain group. However, should it turn into hatred or unfair treatment for the group then prejudice and discrimination come into play.
