As a woman of Irish descent, I have very strong ties to the country and my family celebrates many traditions that are native to Ireland. I am tired of the stereotypes that come with being proud of who I am as a person. In history, it is unfortunately very true that Irish people were assumed to be lazy, unmotivated, drunks with no desire to do anything productive, but I’m here to shut down that stereotype as well as many others. Let’s start with a simple one. Not all Irish people have red hair. Yes it is true that Ireland has the 2nd greatest amount of people with red hair in the world, but the truth of it is that that is only 4% of their population. With this declaration, I hope to establish that I refuse to be insulted by negative stereotypes about my heritage. I am entitled to be proud of who I am without being criticized, mocked or judged for it. I am entitled to correct someone when a stereotype is made against me about my short temper, my curly hair, or the fact that I’m lacking in height compared to a lot of people my age.
