A song comes on the radio. Someone turns it up, and people start to sing along. They are laughing and having fun, but are they really listening to the lyrics? Do they hear the demeaning stereotypes of women, or are they just immersed in the catchy rhythm of the song? Women have always been stereotyped in songs of all genres. However, the way women have been portrayed in music has changed significantly, but it has not necessarily changed for the better. A prime example of this would be country music. In the 1950s, older country songs portrayed the woman as a housewife, but this changed to the stereotype of women just being around to look pretty. Women have always been stereotyped in country music, but over the course of time these stereotypes have changed from being a housewife to a piece of “eye candy”. In the song, Arnold sing “I’ll pay the bills”, and this implies that the woman is supposed to stay at home and take care of things. The man; however, goes to work and earns money for the household. This song implies that the women cannot plan meaningful things; her husband will take “care of everything”, so she can take care of the miniscule things (Arnold). These stereotypes were prevalent during the 1950s, but female stereotypes have changed significantly over the course of time. The song “Country Girl (Shake it For Me)” is a song filled with catchy lyrics and rhythms. The majority of people who enjoy this song are young adults. Furthermore, this song is about a girl who is dancing for guys at a party. The reason she is does this is because the girl wants to show off her looks to the guys (Bryan). This song is filled with female stereotypes that has reinforced the way many people view women
