During the 1990’s the steroid era began for major league baseball. Some of baseball’s most talented hitters and fielders were testing positive for performing enhancing drugs. Those players include Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez. All three of these players were headed for the hall of fame before the scrutiny came of the possible use of performance enhancing drugs. Performance enhancing drugs are used to improve physical activites in human beings. After analyzing articles and information on the usage of performance enhancing drugs in baseball, I am able to show that Major League Baseball players viewpoints differ from the audiences viewpoints, and ultimately what is the outcome from the usage of these performance enhancing drugs. …show more content…
However steroids haven’t always been a problem in the sport. Only until recently has the usage of steroids skyrocketed in Major League Baseball. Some of the biggest names in baseball such as Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez have all been accused of using steroids. (The term steroids in this research paper will also refer to performance enhancing drugs.) These accusations have gone as far as suspensions to federal court cases, to possible jail time. The use of performance enhancing drugs isn’t just ruining the players careers, it is creating an unfairness in the game of baseball, creating a loss in fans and is ruining the sport of baseball. Performance enhancing drugs haven’t always existed in Major League Baseball. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and others are able to prove that. Back in the mid and early 1900’s tons of records were being set. Home run records, Runs batted in records, and stolen base records. These records were holding decade after decade, until we get into the early 90’s. For example, Barry Bonds was a fan favorite for years. Everyone was cheering for Bonds to break the home run record, which he did at 73 home runs. Bonds became king that day. He was then the best hitter of all time, but then when steroid allegations started to come out. Bonds started to lose his credibility for all the great things that he had accomplished. The next record that Bonds to break was 755 set by Hank Aarron in the 50’s. This was one of the most promising records to break and no one had even come close to this record within the half of century. The Sanfransisco Giant fans were still excited about Bonds breaking this record, but the rest of his fan base had faded once he was accused of becoming a cheater. By the end of Bonds career the fans and media didn’t really care much that Bonds broke the record. Fans and reporters watched Bonds retire and he didn’t get the same praise he would have gotten if he didn’t use
