Bath, N.Y. (WENY) -- New developments in a fatal fire investigation in Steuben County. New charges were announced Wednesday in connection with the fire in Wayland in February. Joseph and Iryn Meyers were arrested March in connection to the death of David O'Dell.

"Shock, anger, hurt, cause I've known Joe Meyers since I was 12-years-old. I never, ever thought that he would do anything like this, never," said Laurie Mills, sister of David O'Dell. Mills says her family can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

After Wednesday's grand jury indictment, Joe and Iryn Meyers will be charged with 2 counts of Arson in the First Degree, Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Insurance Fraud and Conspiracy. Iryn Meyers is individually charged with Falsifying Business Records in the First

The allegations are that there was more than $50,000 dollars on the table for them to gain through insurance policies and that was the motive, we believe, for the fire in this situation," said Steuben District Attorney Brooks Baker.

New York State Police have been investigating the fatal fire on New Galen Road since it happened on February 15th. Joseph and Iryn Meyers were originally arrested last month on charges of Falsifying Business Records. District Attorney Brooks Baker says the connections in this case are not random.

"From my understanding, Mr. O'Dell was a long time friend of the Meyers family. He was at sometime an employee of Joseph Meyers and that the Meyers had some connection over the real estate within the house. They were behind the house from him, or something of that nature. These were not strangers, these were people who were well connected and have known each other for a number of years," said Baker.
