This is a beautiful story that tells of one man’s journey to understand how his father loved and how his family ties were strengthened. Stevin Martin uses stories from his childhood to give us a better understanding of how he viewed his father as a child. My favorite narrative is “When I was sixteen, he handed down to me the family’s 1957 Chevy. When, I was seven or eight, I discovered on Christmas morning a brand-new speed bike illuminated by the red, green, and blue of the tree lights.” This account tells the reader that even though his father did not verbalize his love for him he loved him in the way he knew at the time. He expressed his love through gifts. According to Gary Chapman acts of service is an unspoken language of love.
