The Manitowoc county justice system showed no sympathy towards Steven Avery convicting him of a sexual assault and a murder with suspicious evidence and shaky reasoning. Steven Avery of Manitowoc county got sentenced to 32 years in prison for the rape of Penny Beernsten a crime which he did not commit. Sixteen alibi witnesses testified on Avery’s behalf accounting for him while the crime was being committed. This did not matter to the Manitowoc county police department. There is an argument to be made that Avery was singled out and treated unfairly in both cases. In the sexual assault case, Penny Beernsten described her attacker and Judy Dvorak suggested that it sounded like Steven Avery. Of course Beernsten chose Avery out of the line because the police subconsciously told exactly who the attacker was. In the murder case the only suspect the police ever looked into was Steven Avery and most of the evidence against Avery was uncovered by Manitowoc county police who were unsupervised when most of the evidence was found.
