Epictetus's definition of philosophy differs from what we understand as the standard definition.We have come accustomed to the fact that philosophy is a branch of science that is tasked with trying to understand the world, through knowledge and wisdom. Epictetus however believes that philosophy is not only a branch of knowledge and wisdom but also a way of life, that can help achieve happiness.

As a Stoic Epictetus believes that a person can achieve happiness when they achieve a balance with their thoughts and desires,however he expands on this idea by stating that happiness can be achieved through reason. Epictetus then states that everyone every born is given the gift of reason and that you do not have to be wealthy or in a specific status
