Concert Report I
On Saturday November 7, 2015, I attended the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra in the Main Stage of Staller Center for the Arts at 8pm, which is conducted by Eduardo Leandro. Three pieces, Ravel: La Valse; Richard Strauss, Burleske for Piano and Orchestra; Beethoven, Symphony No. 3 in E-at major “Eroica were performed by the Orchestra. In this report, I will talk about the three pieces and tell my feelings about them.
Beethoven’s Symphonay No. 3
This symphony was played as the last piece in the concert. It has four movements, all of them have its own theme and character. The subtitle of this symphony is “Eroica”, which means Heroic. Based on the characteristics of all the four movements, I agree with the subtitle of the piece

The tonality of the first movement is Major and it is a lively, passionate and bright movement with fast tempo in a triple meter. After the main theme was played, a 3-note motive was played by three solo instruments, first with oboe, second with clarinet and finally with the flute. This 3-note motive is very often repeated during the whole movement, with a little variation in the order of the instruments. There is a change in mood during the movement, however, the general character of the piece is joyful and …show more content…

The main theme then follows, which is played by the oboe and flute, while the string instruments continue to play the bouncing short duration notes in staccato as accompaniment. In 39:50, the texture changes to polyphonic, different instruments play a different melody. During 41:09-42:40, a different section and melody is played by the horns, it is composed of arpeggios with the notes of the scale played by twice instead of once, the melody is then completed by strings and woodwinds. Players of the horns play together and create several chords, which is a homophonic texture, these chords and the slower tempo of the horns makes a very strong and confident mood in the movement. After that, the main theme is played again as of the beginning of the third movement. The Coda at 44:04 marks the ending of the movement, the whole movement has frequent decrescendo and crescendo, it finally ends in forte, these make the audience feel like they are walking along a path with ups and downs, and finally arrive at the destination. This also makes the whole movement more active and colourful in
