The first step to stopping poaching is for the global community to recognize the war on poaching as an actual war. Like I’ve mentioned many times before, rangers face injury, death, and even torture. In 2008, a Congolese ranger was tortured and beaten to death by poachers while his comrades watched helplessly (Neme). And outside of real physical torture there is a kind of mental torture rangers face when the constantly come across carcasses of poached animals, each one a reminder of their failures. Sean Willmore gave a statistic for ranger deaths, “worldwide, about two rangers are killed every week,” (Neme). Two rangers a week is comparable to the number of American police officers killed nation wide (NLEO). The reason ranger have such a hard time is for the most part they are under equipped and under paid (Neme). Poachers are armed with Ak-47s and grenades, an arsenal fit for the military (Scriber). But many rangers don’t even have guns to defend themselves. Of course, some rangers are well equipped, but many are only armed with flashlights and GPS units (Adams). …show more content…
But in order for more peaceful measures of conservation there will need to be some animals left to conserve. Without the safety barrier Rangers create between the animals and their hunters, the poachers would come close to wiping out most poached species in the coming decade. The anti-poaching world needs a new philosophy that if the poachers have this our rangers need it to. If poachers have advanced rifles, our rangers need them too.
