Poems are a wonderful type of literature, not just because most of them have rhymes that can capture the reader’s attention, but also because most if not all have deeper meanings within themselves. The poem “Strange Fruit” was published on September 5,2012 by Abel Meeropol, is such a great example of deeper meaning behind a poem. Mr. Meeropol talks about two black teens that were lynched and hanged and blood dripping all over the place. The author Meeropol was an english teacher at Dewitt Clinton High School and is a poet that wrote a poem about the school. Abel Meeropol was motivated to write this poem when he saw the two black teens hung on the tree. They lynched those two African American teens who didn’t have to be killed and hanged on a tree that was just not right. The mood of the poem “Strange Fruit” is really disappointing to hear the lines of this poem it makes you feel sorry for those kid and want to be able to help them but you can’t it’s already done. The tone of the poem is really strong as it progresses it has a stronger tone that want’s to make you cry. The emotion that the speaker uses as he talks is hate toward racism it’s like he’s expressing his hate on the lyrics and as he talks. They relate in conveying the theme because they include black bodies. “black bodies swingin’ in the southern breeze”(Meeropol). The black bodies in the poem “Strange Fruit” are the two african american teens. The poem relates to history because “news of the lynching spread across the world”(Richman). The theme racism is really important to everyone because back in history all african american people were judge because of their color. The author Abel Meeropol was very successful on achieving his goal he talked about racism in the poem that was his main message.
