Appearance vs reality is used as a major theme in the play Street Car Named Desire.At the beginning, Blanche was presented as a former school teacher who was from a once wealthy family. The fact that she was able to survive the trauma behind losing her family members and inheritances a result of death in a way portrayed as a strong woman at the beginning. As the play progresses, readers realize that behind this trait of strength lies her insecurities and the fear of facing her past. Blanche at a point tried to make Stella guilty by presenting the suffering and pains she went through tying to save Belle Reve. However, readers realized that Blanche had a hidden past that torments her in a way. We learned that when she doesn't get the compliments she wants form Stanley, she tries to flirt with Mitch so as to get compliments to make her feel better. Her inability to give Stella's environment a good compliment shows how in illusion she tries to live a wealthy life when at the moment, she basically has no wealth. Blanche brought along a trunk which contained costume jewelry . In appearance the jewelry portrays her as a wealthy individual but in reality the jewelry had no significant value.
This topic interests me in the sense it relates to our everyday lives as humans. It exposes and elaborates more on how things we see is not really how they look. It in a way eposes the hypocrisy that as humans we tend to live with
