In Martin Luther King Jr.’s book, Strength to Love, he states, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” After reading these sentences, I felt a sense of exponential change. It planted a hypothetical seed of self-reflection in my mind. I began to wonder if my approach to societal issues was truly effective. In addition, I reflected on the ways that I treated people, and I debated with myself on whether or not I used love to rid the hate from my life. Not only did I ponder on my treatment of other people, but I also began to question other people’s treatment of me. Like a chain reaction, these two sentences created a single thought that led to numerous other ones. I realized King’s intentions were to drive out racism, a form of hatred, by using love. If people were treated kindly even when they were not treating others kindly, they would realize their wrongdoing and rid themselves of hatred. wrote, I had confrontation with a few people in my life. I had a fight-fire-with-fire mentality that resulted in a continuation of the confrontation. After they insulted me, I thought it would be best to insult them as well to equal out the playing field. Despite my immaturity at the time, I was able to realize that the only way to solve the issues between us would be for me to exemplify love instead of hate. I apologized for the hurtful words that I said, and they were actually able to admit their fault and apologize as well. The insight I received from Strength to Love allowed me to correctly solve an issue at hand. I was able to drive out hate with love. The absence of hate led to the remending of several relationships, which are still in tact today.
