Stripping In Saunder's Sea Oak

At what cost will one suffer in order to increase personal wealth? Unfortunately, this answer has proven to be extensively degrading. In Saunder’s, Sea Oak, the narrator/main character unselfishly works as a male stripper with the purpose of providing for him and whom he takes care of with the main goal of having a better life. As dehumanizing of a job that stripping can be, we find this desperate act for money in other works of modern literature. The movie, Magic Mike, follows the life of a young man doing everything he can do to live the life he dreams of, but unfortunately, his high ambitions also lead him into a life of stripping. When Thomas discusses the sad life of his recently fired co – worker, the reasoning is truly unsettling. According to the rank Thomas’s friend was given by the customers, his cute ranking is no longer up to par therefore resulting in his termination. Magic Mike also includes scenes of judgment similar to this when examining each new stripper and/or dancer. Mike must push his new apprentice in order for him to be “good enough” for the business. When these men are being judged like a piece of meat, I find it completely dehumanizing by taking away the culture of the person and just basing a career off appearance. When I first read this, I questioned the character organization. Normally, the women are the characters who are being judged and participating in such scandalous acts. I found these literary works to leave Dave and Mike’s characters on the table in order for readers to interpret the notions of attainting social status and gender differences how they may. I believe it to possible that Saunders and the director of Magic Mike are challenging the common notion that women are inferior along with what it takes to defeat
