Have you ever gotten in an argument or fight with a person or a sibling over who has more control over something?This is an example of what Buck had to go through in the novel Call of The Wild by Jack London. Buck was a tamed house pet that lived on an estate in Santa Clara Valley, California. He was sold to someone participating in the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska. In the Yukon he learned he had to fight to be the lead dog and fight for almost everything he wanted such as a place to sleep. Buck constantly was switching owners until he met his favorite. His name was John Thornton. Buck eventually killed Spitz in a fight to the death. Spitz would always try to mess with Buck and take his food,bed, etc “ But when Buck finished his ration and returned, he found his nest occupied. A warning snarl told him that the trespasser was Spitz (London 25). This relates to Buck’s struggle for mastery because Spitz was trying to overpower Buck to show his power and take his nest he made.
After Buck became the lead dog he had to fight other dogs to remain the lead dog. This is where Buck’s struggle for mastery continued. He constantly fought other dogs to remain feared and not to be messed with by the other dogs. He was in a town in the Yukon where dogs were everywhere and there were fierce fighters among them “ There were fierce fighters among them, but three battles with the fiercest brought Buck to mastery, so that when he bristled and showed his teeth they got out of his way” (London 77). As you can see, Buck constantly was struggling for his mastery over the other dogs in the harsh Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. He learned he had to fight to remain the leader of the dogs. When Buck killed Spitz it was his first time being the leader of the sled dog team. Many of the dogs were not afraid to kill each other for food or power over the other dogs.
