The first interesting aspect that contributes to the fraudulence of collegiate institutions is compensation of athletes. The NCAA is an association created for the sole purpose of providing an education to athletes; however, the initial mission of the NCAA suffers from corruption especially in the way the association treats student-athletes. The NCAA in all of its greed driven glory derived the term student-athlete in order to legally avoid paying athletes. Katherine M. Hetherington, assistant professor of accounting with San Francisco State University, effervescently observes, “Between the late 1950s and the present day, the NCAA has used ‘student athlete’ as a shield against a variety of legal challenges that hinged on the employee status of college athletes” (34). The NCAA literally uses a term so seemingly finite such as “student-athlete” in order to avoid an infamous corporate mess such as actually compensating athletes for the billions of dollars they generate for senior institutions. Money is the true driver of this association and the greed they suffer from violate the rights of students. While prospective athletes are under the impression that the NCAA is a ticket into a world of glamorized athletics and sufficient education, decades of controversy and misdemeanor actually juxtapose these naïve expectations.
