When growing up children develop forms of attributions, belief about his or her success and failure. In the midst of developing these attributions, some will have an incremental view of life believing if they work hard at what they want in life they will reach their goals or entity view of life where they make excuses for themselves and why they can reach the goals they would like to obtain. For example, it is common to find a white male that says he will never make it to the NBA because he is white and he does not have the DNA of a black male, this person has developed an entity view of like killing off his motivation and leading him to have no self regulation because in his eyes he will never be good enough. One way a teacher can help develop student’s motivation is showing them an achievement that someone who was or is same age as them has reached. When youthful students see a peer do something they are more likely to do it also. Giving your student rules and procedures to follow, are another way to help them grow, but in the form of information so that they don’t feel so controlled when it come to decision making. Allowing students to set their own goals is a way to improve development, however as a teacher, it will be your duty to assist them with making short-term goals, and helping them to reach that goal finalizing what they may have a passion for. Encouraging and recognizing your students' hard work is key, as a teacher, you do not want to recognize raw talent and genetics because that can be depressing for others. When teaching you want to recognize hard work and work ethic, so for example if you’re a gym teacher and one of your students happen to be a great basketball player don’t recognize him on how many shots he makes but recognize how hard he/she is working to make his shots and how many he has taken, encouraging not only him to work harder but the students around him also creating positive classroom environment building self-regulation (Telljohann, 2012, p. 111). Teachers who encourages sports and extra after school activities has also found their student to be more motivated and have more self-regulated because these student have found interest in something they can peruse.
