I have always believed that no matter what, if you are passionate about something then you will succeed in it. As a result, I have always wanted to be true to myself and pursue something that I felt would undoubtedly make an impact on my community. I have always wanted to be involved in a position where I can actively participate in decision-making processes that would be beneficial to my community. I have been active in the community outside of school through working on Sylvester Turner campaign for Houston Mayor. Through this, I became aware of the diligent work associated with the democratic process and the intense outreach program we had to conduct while working on his campaign. I intend to bring these skills that I have practiced in my own community to the community of the University of Houston. Another reason I have become involved in the Student Government Association is to be apart of a larger community than myself. I have been involved in on-campus activities with Students for Justice in Palestine and Students for a Democratic Society in which I have really appreciated my time spent in being able to form a bond with a range of diverse students. The discussion surrounding sexual assault has become more of an open topic and something I firmly believe should be something discussed on a college campus. College students especially should be able to have access to educational opportunities and information that raises awareness on how to help and protect others and themselves. It is an extremely important topic that involves teaching students how to get consent in any situation and define the boundaries of sexual assault so that no one is ever is put in an uncomfortable situation. Along with education and awareness services, I am also a strong advocate for support services for sexual assault victims who may not know what to do in the aftermath of a situation. Earlier in the semester, I took a survey regarding sexual assault on campus in which one question asked if I knew who and where to contact in the case of an assault case and I had no idea. Therefore I believe it is important to express, explicitly, where a student can have a safe space for contacting someone they trust for support. I am really passionate about being a part of a committee that I believe is key to the overall well being of all students on campus to promote and safer
