Study Buddies Reflection

My experience with Study Buddies (Or homework hounds, same program but sponsored by a different organization) involved tutoring kids from K-8 who resided at or near the West Blvd area. Although at times it was a little stressful, especially when the child didn’t want to be there, I appreciated this experience, as it is given me physical proof of some of the challenges some kids face physical effects of community marginalization. However, Study Buddies, as well as Homework Hounds has showed me how some kids and parents could thrive despite some of the circumstances and stressors they face in their communities and daily lives.
When I initially volunteered, I originally thought the Police Activities League would play a significant role in determining the structure of the program. However, when attended my first session at Study Buddies, it was apparent that Police Activities League gave the volunteers greater freedom to determine the nature of the program, as long as the volunteer organization, Hand On Charlotte, were able to provide a set number of volunteers to study buddies and Homework Hounds. Hands On Charlotte mission statement is “to inspire, equip and mobilize a diverse corps of volunteers to strengthen our community. Their mission statement reads as follow, “The goal of the Police Activities League (formerly known as the Police Athletic League) is to provide educational, programmatic, and structured support to youth housed within underserved communities, while aiding them in improving their decision-making skills and preparing them for a successful future, thus enhancing the quality of their lives and allowing them to make positive contributions to society.” While the Police Activities League has a different mission than hands-on Charlotte, this program successfully meets the goals and ambitions of this
