That moment you wake up to go to your children’s football game on a Saturday morning to come outside and find your rear view mirror broken, the front passenger tire flat and a dent in the fender above the flat tire and you have no idea what took place the night before. That is until you turn to your wife and ask, “What happened last night?” She proceeds to say “You need help and that is all that needs to be said.” That is usually the situation while using a substance that alters your brain waves. A person in this situation can be suffering from a substance abuse disorder, in this case it is alcohol. It may be legal but it is a “drug” that effects the way one functions on a day to day. Once taken too far, one may have to seek treatment to overcome the hold alcohol has on his life. The treatment process can be a tricky one because you never know how a person will react to each treatment approach. Some of the treatments include individual counseling, group counseling, peer support, 12 step programs, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, partial hospital program, medications, and recovery support services (Treatments for Substance Use Disorders, n.d.). The approach I feel is most effective is the counseling methods. With the individual counseling you a chance to reflect on you and see your faults and triggers. Group counseling along with the individual counseling is good because it “provides social reinforcement for pursuit of recover” (Treatments for Substance Use Disorders, n.d.). It “focuses on reducing or stopping substance use, skill building, adherence to a recovery plan, and social, family, and professional/educational outcomes” (Treatments for Substance Use Disorders, n.d.). During the treatment stage you are presented a couple of therapies which include but are not
