The Bee Story
The Secret Life of Bees is about a 14 year old named Lily, she accidentally shoots her mother when Lily was just four years old. At the beginning of every chapter in the book the author, Sue Monk Kidd includes an epigraph about bees to relate that one specific chapter to. In chapter ten the epigraph states “A bee’s life is short. During spring and summer - the most strenuous periods of foraging - a worker bee , as a rule, does not live more than four or five weeks . . . Threatened by all kinds of dangers during their foraging flights, many workers die before they have reached even that age.”(189) In chapter 10, August Boatwright, Lily, Rosaleen, and June Boatwright, all go out to the wailing wall to find May as she went out there because she heard the news that their friend, Zach, has been arrested. As they went out to the wailing wall and discover that May was not where she was supposed to be, they search down to the creek and find May lying dead in the creek where she has drowned herself. May’s death was related to the death of the worker bees that is going through a strenuous period just like Zach getting arrested would be May’s strenuous period.May’s death opens up the eyes of others.
