The three kids, Ralph, Simon, and Jack are walking through thick forest and encounter a pig, stuck in a “curtain of creepers” (pg.27). They held a vote for chief and Ralph won. Jack’s attitude/tone can show that he isn’t very happy with this. “…the freckles on Jack’s face disappeared.” The imagery, when Golding projects Jack’s face as empty, constructs the competitive emotion that he demonstrates, “The suffusion drained from Jack’s face” (pg.20). They then start up the mountain, “Then the piglet tore loose from the creepers and scurried into the undergrowth.” The imagery portrayed in this scene, from the use of the words, “tore” and “scurried” refines the importance of this piglet- disappearing out of sight in the blink of an eye (pg.27). The pig that escaped…show more content… While the other two are taking this incident very lightly, Jack’s tone transfers into a tenser and defensive one; he keeps trying to defend his actions (pg.27). Currently, Jack feels wounded and betrayed. When Jack realizes that he does not have any power, he then bursts out to desperately try and prove his intentions. “Next time there would be no mercy.” (pg. 27). When Jack extends his emotions out, the imagery, reveals that he feels better about the way the others view him. The little election they had, had scarred his ego; Jack allowing the piglet to escape brought forth a tone of dominance. The theme of selfishness- the fact that, often one will never be fine with their power and social status slipping right out of their hands. This tone symbolizes the leadership struggles in Golding’s society at the time. In many ways, World War II was just like this, in the sense that countries were deceived to defend their ego. The desperate need for them to just prove themselves- “I was choosing a place” and “Next time there would be no mercy.” directly translates to the unending conflict between them
