Explain one strategy for memory improvement.

Active processing is a strategy for memory improvement. We are more likely to remember something when we have actively processed it. In 1975 Craik and Lockhatt suggested memory depends on deep and meaningful processing at the point of learning. Craik then investigated this idea, testing recall under different conditions. He presented 4 groups with a list of printed words and asked each of them to carry out a different task. Group 1 to answer structural question, 2 to carry out acoustic task, 3 to carry out a semantic task and 4 no particular task at all. They found that participants were better able to recall words which had been processed more deeply (processed semantically) supporting their theory and the idea that a more deep and meaningful processing at the point of learning aids memory recall and improvement.

One strategy Alice could use would be organization. An effective way of improving long-term memory is to use hierarchies to organize the material into meaningful patterns. This makes it easier to locate specific items of information in your memory. In general, by organizing information and seeing the links between different pieces of information you can increase its meaningfulness to remember it more effectively.
