Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. It accounts for the loss of more than 41,000 American lives each year, more than double the number of lives lost to homicide. In the novel Silver Water, the narrator explains how mental illness can affect a family. Amy Bloom, the author, focuses on explaining how different counselors and therapists worked out or turned into being a large failure. Galen and David, her mother and father, both wanted help their daughter,because they could tell that ”She’s going off”, but the only help they could provide her would be the hospital.Throughout the novel, the reader sees how the family struggles with a person who is mentally ill. There are many incidents throughout where the family is trying to summit Rose to a mental clinic. This could resemble a image of hope, when the family is trying to provide Rose with a safe environment to live in. She would go out into the woods behind her house and hide until dusk, then Galen would go and find her. After, three weeks Galen and David were concerned about her daughter's health, then they went to seek professional help. ¨She doesn't need a heart-to-heart talk with Mom, she needs a hospital (pg.88)¨. The family notices that Rose is making a turn for the worse, and wanted to help her live a healthy lifestyle. Although Rose´s parents love her, they are sending Rose away to mostly help out with the family problem, of becoming a normal family. As a result of Rose´s mental illness is becoming worse, it will only make matters worse for the family. In relation to the quote, the reader can understand how difficult it is to provide care for a mentally ill
