Psychiatric nurses have a frontline opportunity for intervention and primary prevention in suicidal clients. Suicide is at epidemic proportions both in the United States and across the globe (Bolster, Holliday, Oneal, & Shaw, 2015). The more educated psychiatric nurses are about suicide the better we are prepared to intervene and prevent it. There are various types of assessments and risk assessments used in the field of mental health and nursing; this paper will focus specifically on suicide risk assessments.
