In the novel Sula, there are three main characters that have the presumption of being “good” characters. Sula, Nel, and Eva Peace, are the characters that I believe are the “good guys” in the novel. “You think I don’t know what your life is like just because I ain’t living it? I know what every colored woman in this country is doing. Dying. Just like me. But the difference is they dying like a stump. Me, I’m going down like one of those redwoods. Eva was a good character and I have a lot of respect for her. Eva was able to sacrifice her own life for all of her three children's lives. The only thing that Eva wanted for her children was happiness. There are two major things that happen in the novel Sula, that cause the readers to believe Eva is a good character. Eva’s daughter catches on fire and Eva flies out of her window to land on Hannah and stop the fire from spreading. Her attempt does not work, but the fact that she tried to help and save hannah means that she did truly care about her. Hannah was not the only child that Eva tried to save. Eva saved Plum from living a miserable life on drugs. She knew that he could not survive the way he was. “ There wasn’t space for him in my womb. And he was crawlin’ back. Being helpless and thinking baby thoughts and dreaming baby dreams and messing up his pants again and smiling all the time. I had enough room in my heart, but not in my womb, not no more. I birthed him once. I couldn't do it again…..” (Morrison 161). This quote explains to the readers that Eva killed Plum, because she loved his so much. She felt as if she didn’t have a choice. She could not let him back in her womb, and he would live a horrible life without her; so why put him through that pain. She decided to kill him for his own good. I believe she saved Plums
