Medical Sonographer, a specialized health care worker who performs ultrasounds, is a career I wish to pursue so I can work with other people, learn new things, and work a set schedule. I have been interested in becoming a medical sonographer for about two years. I think I became interested in the career because I shadowed an ultrasound technician last year and it made me very interested in this career. Challenges of getting a job in this career field is that I will have to find a hospital that has job openings that are in my living area. I will also have to go to school for a longer time to get the degrees I need to become a medical sonographer. They are able to do many different types of ultrasounds. They are expected to know how to read measurements of the different things they perform ultrasounds on. There are a wide variety of things they can do. Medical sonographers can perform ultrasounds to look at pregnant women, to look at a heart, or to look at the blood flow. “For most procedures, they spread a gel on the patient’s skin to transmit the sound waves,” according to the article “Overview” (1). This job can offer full benefits if they work as a full-time medical sonographer. One benefit that they are offered is health insurance. Another benefit is that they can paid vacations so they are able to get paid without working. Medical sonographers get paid also while they are sick or injured and cannot work. According to the article “Wages,” typical benefits are sick leave, paid vacation, and health insurance (1). Medical sonographers can be offered many benefits, but they are mostly offered to the people that work full-time or have worked as a medical sonographer for a long time. The chances of me getting a job as a medical sonographer are very good. In high school, I am taking many science and computer classes so I am prepared for college and the other classes I will have to take. I know how to work will with others, and how to use a computer system as needed. I think I would live in the St. Louis area because they may have many available job offers as a medical sonographer. The employment for a medical sonographer in the St. Louis area is 424 (“Employment and Lookout” 1). If I live in that area, it also gives me the option to travel less rather than living far
