When did children become the center of attention of medicine? Children became a big focus point of medicine in 18th century Europe. The pediatric career then came about during the early 19th century, and became taught in the mid 19th century (“Pediatrician Career Information”). So what exactly is a pediatrician? The American Academy of Pediatrics defines a pediatrician as “Pediatrics is the specialty of medical science concerned with the physical, mental, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. There are many different work environments that a pediatrician can work in. Some days can be very hectic while others are slow paced. The day of a pediatrician normally varies, but there is a generalized idea of what goes on day to day. In the morning pediatricians have to do rounds at the hospital which can take up to two to three hours. Then in the afternoon pediatricians visit their patients appointments, which the business of appointments changes on a daily basis. And finally in the evening a pediatrician normally goes back to the hospital to make a few more rounds. All in all a work day normally ends around 6:30-7 pm. Throughout the day pediatricians have many different work activities they need to deal with and different duties. A big duty pediatrician is to make sure their patients mental and behavioral well being is good and keep track of their medication. Some different matters a pediatrician has to deal with can include anything from acne to infectious diseases and they need the ability to treat many different illnesses. A normal workweek for a pediatrician is around sixty hours or more. Also, throughout the workday a pediatrician might be on call for three to four days, so they won’t know their specific
