College sports and athletes been growing popular over the time. There are many schools that have top class athletes competing from their side. Yet as per law, these athletes are not payed for their performance similar to professional athletes.
Most schools have sports as part of their curriculum as a means to teach healthy lifestyle and spirit of competition. As the main goal is not to profit from these activities adding a system to pay athletes would most probably defeat this goal. Many programs who have started as a way to add some extra cash on the side have in the past shown to have completely lost their focus from the main objective.
