There are many historical issues that have had a large impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, some of these issues include colonisation. Colonisation has impacted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in many ways. In 1768 Australia was invaded, up until this point the Aboriginal people had ownership of the land. Between 1788 and 1900 the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Australia had decreased by 90%. When the British arrived in Australia there were between 300,000 to 1 million Indigenous people within Australia of which only 1 out of 4 Aboriginal Australians survived.
