The setting of the novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, is set in New England during world war 2. Mostly all of this book takes place at an all boys academy called Devon School. The mood of the story is almost always tense or competitive. Every character has a special personality that leaves one confused and wanting to read more. The novel is all about the twist and turns that throw one for a loop. Gene is the 2nd in mental achievements and physical activities. He is five foot eight and a half inches. Gene is close to finny in weight and height. Gene is the protagonist of the story and he shows jealousy throughout the story. He is confused about his emotions toward everything especially towards Finny. Next is Elwin “leper” Lepellier the observant and quiet type. Gene stays for dinner and learns more about Leper and the war until he has enough of the crying and goes back to Devon. A huge part in the novel is the trial Brinker Hadley holds to find out the truth about finny's fall. Everyone is in black robes sitting around Finny and Gene asking them questions about the accident. Gene is trying to lie and not let them know the truth until Brinker brings up leper and says that he is here and he would remember. Finny then goes and gets Leper which catches everyone by surprise. Leper then asked everything that they wanted to know because he can answer it. He then spills the beans and tells every single detail about what happened that day. Finny gets frustrated and runs out of the room but slips and falls down the marble stairs and breaks his leg the second time. He goes to the infirmary where Dr.Stanpole reset his leg but the bone marrow gets into his bloodstream and into his heart and kills
